Profile
In 1975, while still at high school, some of my friends discovered the joy of square dancing. They often invited me along. I knew I wouldn't like it and refused to go. In the end I decided that I would go, even though I would not enjoy it - that way I could tell my friends, I've done it, I don't like it, don't ask me again.
Now, some 45 years later, I have to admit that it was kind of fun.
It was totally different to what I had expected. It didn't require fancy footwork and it didn't require you to memorise dance routines. It was great.
One of my friends had also started to call - three months after my first dance I had my first call. From memory, I was awful - but that didn't stop me.
In 1977 I started my first dance group - Spatiores (Latin word for Promenaders) in Gosford. Two years later I started David's Wyong Workshop, which I believe was the first dedicated Plus-level dance in Australia.
In 1979 I also released my first square dance single on the Rockin' A label. I have since released music on Chicago Country, Snow, Omar, Dance Ranch and Riverboat. I, at one stage, owned three labels of my own - C-Bar-C, Seven C's and Four C's (the last in conjunction with Jack Berg - even though the letter C does not appear in his name, he wanted to corner the market for labels beginning with the letter C).
I have moved around NSW and the ACT and, consequently, have run clubs in Canberra, the NSW Central Coast, Richmond, Carlinford, Port Stephens, Medowie and Port Macquarie.
At one time I was the editor of the ACF newsletter, CallerLink. I also produced my own news letter for five years and had over 115 subscribers in 13 countries.
Curious to see how I compared with overseas callers I had a two month tour of Europe in 2001. It was a success and everywhere I called I was invited back. I had a three month tour in 2004. I have been the feature caller for weekends in Scotland, England, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, the USA, New Zealand, the Philippines and China - not to mention have been a feature caller at weekends in NSW, South Australia, Queensland and Victoria. Many places I have been a feature caller I have also run caller schools and seminars. I have been a 'diseminator' at several caller funtions in NSW.
I currently run two dances a week - one at Basic/MS level and the other at Plus/A level.
I'm not wrong about many things but I was certainly wrong in my prejudgement of square dancing - it has been the biggest constant in my life.
